In recognition of a powerful legacy of representation and progress, the Pennsylvania Legislative Black Caucus (PLBC) commemorated the 50th anniversary of the historic moment when K. Leroy Irvis became the first Black Speaker of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives. This milestone served as the catalyst for a vibrant and meaningful celebration: a Day of Action at the Capitol, uniting Black elected officials, clergy, business leaders, students, and advocates from across the Commonwealth.

Hosted in the heart of Harrisburg, the multi-day event was both a celebration and a call to continue the work Speaker Irvis began. Participants engaged in a full schedule of impactful activities, including policy discussions, networking receptions, Capitol tours, and a community partner fair that highlighted grassroots efforts advancing equity in Pennsylvania. The event not only honored history but also built momentum for the future, emphasizing the importance of collective advocacy in shaping inclusive policies.
Attendees were invited to connect directly with lawmakers, learn about current legislative initiatives led by the PLBC, and explore the archives chronicling decades of Black legislative leadership. A highlight of the experience was the James R. Roebuck PLBC Scholarship Awards Ceremony, which uplifted the next generation of changemakers by providing financial support to students of color pursuing higher education.
The PLBC’s 50th anniversary events marked one of the largest legislative gatherings for Black Pennsylvanians, reaffirming the caucus’s ongoing commitment to justice, opportunity, and visibility. With roots grounded in the transformative vision of K. Leroy Irvis, the PLBC continues to lead with purpose: amplifying the voices and needs of Black and Brown communities through advocacy, policy, and action.
